Tobar helps you keep and organise recordings you find on Tobar an Dualchais and rareTunes, and prepare recordings of your own to offer to an archive. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Tobar is an independent app. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tobar an Dualchais or rareTunes.

How do I save a recording? Choose Tobar an Dualchais: map or rareTunes in the sidebar, open a recording or page, and tap Save. Or tap + and paste a link; the title and type are filled in for you.
Does Tobar download the audio? No. Recordings play on the archive’s own web page, shown inside the app. Tobar keeps only a link, the title, and anything you add yourself, such as notes and lyrics. If a page stops working, the archive’s site has changed or is down.
How do I search? Tobar an Dualchais: search uses that site’s own filters (songs, tunes, interviews, language, years, collection). rareTunes: search uses rareTunes’ own search, with tap-to-search ideas such as reel, fiddle or Shetland.
How do I sort my bookmarks? Drag a bookmark onto a folder, tag or playlist in the sidebar, or right-click (press and hold on iPhone) a bookmark for Move to Folder and Add to Playlist. All bookmarks at the top of the sidebar shows everything.
What are Gàidhlig, Beurla and Scots for? Every bookmark can be marked with the language of the recording, so you can filter by it. Tobar does not guess; you choose.
Where is the year of the recording? Years are entered by you. Tobar does not read them from the websites.
Will my library be on all my devices? Yes, through your own iCloud account, not through any server of mine. See the privacy policy. The sidebar shows whether iCloud is syncing and explains any problem. If you are not signed in to iCloud, the library stays on that device.
How do I record a contribution? Choose My contributions, tap +, and record or import audio. Describe it, mark it Gàidhlig, Beurla or Scots, add the performer, place and summary, and the app lists anything still missing. When ready, it prepares a folder with the audio and a description to offer to an archive.
What about consent? Consent form to print gives a short plain-language form to print and have the performer sign. On iPhone or iPad, Add the signed form scans it with the camera; on a Mac you can choose a photo or PDF. The signed form is kept with the recording and included in the package. Please check with the archive what it needs. The form is a general one and is not legal advice.
Does Tobar send my recording to the archive? No. Archives decide how they accept contributions, so Tobar prepares a package and you send it yourself after contacting them. Nothing is offered without you.
Why is my recording not on my other device? Audio and signed forms stay on the device that made them; only the description syncs. Prepare and share the package from the device that holds the audio.
Who owns the recordings? The recordings on Tobar an Dualchais and rareTunes belong to their holders and are subject to those sites’ terms. Tobar only links to them. Recordings you make are yours and the performers’; you decide what to offer.
No accounts, no subscription, no advertising, no analytics. Apart from loading the two archive websites you choose to browse, and iCloud sync, it makes no network requests.
