The short version

Cuimhne collects nothing. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party code of any kind. Your diary is on your own devices and, if you turn on iCloud, in your own private iCloud database. The developer cannot see any of it.

What the app stores, and where

Everything you put into Cuimhne — entries, dates, tags, background such as schools and jobs, photographs, video, voice notes, documents and places — is stored on your device.

If iCloud sync is switched on, that same information is also stored in your own private CloudKit database, which is part of your personal iCloud account. Apple provides that storage; the developer has no access to it and no way to obtain access. Nothing is stored on any server belonging to the developer, because there is no such server.

What is sent over the network

Only iCloud sync, and only if you enable it. The app contains no networking code of its own — no web requests, no telemetry. If you never turn on iCloud, Cuimhne never uses the network at all.

Permissions, and why

Declining any of these leaves the rest of the app working normally.

Passcodes

A diary can be given a passcode. The passcode itself is never stored: what is saved is a salted SHA-256 hash of it, and the app can only check whether a typed passcode matches.

This is a lock, not encryption. It keeps a casual reader out of a diary on a shared device. It does not encrypt the contents, and somebody with access to the device's files could read the diary without the passcode. It is not represented as more than that anywhere in the app.

Children

Cuimhne is a personal diary with no accounts, no messaging, no content shared with anyone, and no data collection. It gathers nothing from anybody, of any age.

Your data is yours

Everything can be exported at any time from Archive → Save Archive. The resulting .lifediary file is an ordinary zip: rename it .zip and the photographs are in there as normal files, with the words alongside them in diary.json. Nothing about that format needs this app to read it, which is deliberate — a diary you cannot get out of the app is not really yours.

Deleting the app deletes its local data. Diaries synced to iCloud can be removed in Settings under your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.

If this policy changes, the new version will appear at this address with a new date at the top.
