Òrain is a song library for singers: the words, the chords above them, and the recordings and links that go with a song, on your phone and off the internet.

Where are my songs kept? On your device, in the app’s own storage. There is no account and no server — nothing is uploaded anywhere. See the privacy policy.
How do I share one song, or its words? Open the song and use the share button in the toolbar — Share the words sends plain text anyone can read, Share the song file sends a file that opens in Òrain at the other end. Both are also in the ⋯ menu.
How do I get my songs onto another device? Export the library from the Songs tab — the download-arrow button, then Export this library… — and send the file to the other device however you like. Open it there and choose Import a library…. Recordings and imported files do not travel in that file; links do.
How do I add a song?
The + button at the top of the song list. Give it a title, then type or
paste the words. Chords go in square brackets in front of the syllable they
land on: [G]Ailein duinn. If you paste words with chords written on the line
above, the editor offers to convert them.
How do I change the key? Open a song, then the ⋯ menu → Change key…. Choose the chord you want to start on and every other chord moves with it. It saves as a new version, so the original is still there; versions can be renamed, deleted, or made the default.
Can I record myself singing it? Yes — in the media box on the song page, Add → Record. The first time, iOS will ask for the microphone. Recordings stay on the device.
The words scroll off before I finish the verse. The scroll speed is the slider on the auto-scroll bar, and it remembers what you set. Tap stop and it stays where it is; start again and it carries on from there.
Can I make the words bigger? Yes, with the size control on the song page. Òrain also follows the system text size, so if you have made text larger across the phone, the words are already larger here.
A YouTube link says the video cannot be played. Some videos are set by whoever uploaded them to refuse being played inside other apps. Nothing can be done about that from this end — the card offers to open it in YouTube instead.
Something is wrong with the Gaelic in the songs that came with the app. Please tell me. Those eight songs are traditional and out of copyright, added so the app has something in it on the first day, and the spelling is worth getting right.
No accounts, no subscription, no advertising, no analytics. It works with the phone in flight mode, which is the point — the places people sing are often the places with no signal.
